Vacation in the Bahamas

Vacation in The Bahamas?

What's not to like about a vacation in the gorgeous islands of The Bahamas? Just south and east of southern Florida in the Atlantic Ocean, this wonderful tropical group of about 700 scenic islands and cays stretches from the Biminis in the northwest to Great Inagua in the southeast.

This tropical and subtropical paradise is a vacationer's dream, with all 700 islands and cays just waiting to be discovered.  And they're all within a single sovereign country known as the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, so you can put your passport away once you arrive.

A fabulous vacation awaits you:  just catch a plane to The Bahamas and island-hop your way to adventure, or if you prefer you can dive straight into the resort life.  Travel to the islands is simple because of their proximity to the Florida coast.

Many major airlines now offer direct flights to Nassau, although air travel to The Bahamas usually passes through Miami International Airport.

From Nassau you can fly to any of the islands of The Bahamas on an island-hopper.  You can also catch a ferry to get to the Out Islands and the country's more peaceful islets.  That's how simple travel within the islands truly is.

Why not go there, with all the white sand, surf, sun and sailing The Bahamas offers?

Many people in the United States, Europe, Canada and South America feel The Bahamas is the perfect spot for a vacation getaway.  The cruise ship industry agrees, and a large percentage of cruise ship sailings originate from ports in Miami or Fort Lauderdale, Florida, stopping on New Providence and a few of the other Bahamian islands.

If, however, you prefer a more land-based vacation, book a week in one of The Bahamas' many luxurious all-inclusive resorts.

San Salvador Island, sometimes called Watling Island or Columbus Isle, features several romantic retreats and represents an important piece of history.  This island is the first place in the western hemisphere Christopher Columbus ever dropped anchor on his famous voyages of exploration.  The island's locals don't really celebrate his landing, but it is a historically significant event.

Crooked Island is another wonderful place to visit in The Bahamas.  The island's coastline is scenic and quite rugged, while the interior is rich with vegetation and full of flamingos, endangered birds and butterflies.  Crooked Island is also home to what is billed as "the world's largest swimming pool," which takes the shape of the crystal clear shallows found at Bathing Beach.

The world's largest breeding colony of West Indian flamingos is located in Inagua National Park.  Surrounding Lake Rosa, the park features hundreds of exotic birds dominating the lake's shimmering waters.  It's definitely worth a visit.

The limestone openings to the world's longest underwater cave system, located at Grand Bahama Island's Lucayan National Park, provide adventure.  The scenic backdrop of this cave system is formed by turquoise-colored waves and golden-colored sand dunes.

In short, the wonders of The Bahamas are unique and seemingly endless.  While most visitors stay on the beaches and at their resorts, exploring nature's bounty and the islands' cultural diversity is definitely worthy of consideration.

Sport and recreation are also abundantly available in The Bahamas, including world-class diving and snorkeling as well as deep sea fishing.  Nassau, the country's capital city, provides all the amenities you'd want in a major city.  Smaller towns in the southeast islands are more intimate and culturally diverse, offering regional specialties and Caribbean cuisine.

Dig your toes into some glorious white sand this year.  You can begin by investigating online where you'd like to go during your fabulous vacation in the Bahamas.
