Turks Caicos Islands
Enjoy the Flavors of The Turks and Caicos Islands
by Ellie Cominos

Turks Caicos Islands presents a variety of culinary experiences.

The majority of restaurants can be found on Providenciales, the most commercialized of the islands, although there are also some great places to eat on the less busy islands of Grand Turk, Middle Caicos, North Caicos, South Caicos, and Salt Cay.

Island Thyme Bistro is a delightful family run restaurant on Salt Cay that features old favorites along with exciting new dishes from Turks & Caicos, Hispaniola and beyond. The restaurant offers exciting menu items such as the steamed, freshly caught snapper served in a pepper wine sauce with peas and rice, or spicy-hot chicken curry served with a tangy range of chutneys, and also offers meals to go for those wanting to picnic on a deserted beach, enjoy breakfast while watching whales breach, or dine in a quiet moment of romantic solitude.

Away from the seclusion of Salt Cay, Providenciales caters to the growing number of visitors it welcomes each year with a wonderful variety of restaurants for all tastes and budgets.

Da Conch Shack is located in a pretty beach front setting in the Blue Hills area of the island, and is a fabulous little eatery where the specialty is conch, and local fresh seafood, including grouper, snapper and lobster.

The relaxed island atmosphere is all part of the charm, and the friendly service and incredible view combined with the delicious food make Da Conch Shack a restaurant not to be missed when visiting the Turks and Caicos Islands!

At the Sands Resort on beautiful Grace Bay, Hemingway's on the Beach offers a casual atmosphere complemented by a wonderful menu selection for all tastes.

Lunch choices include an array of gourmet sandwiches, entrée salads and specialties such as soft fish tacos, mango shrimp salad and Caribbean jerk chicken & chips. A dinner favorite is the fresh grouper - lightly spiced and pan seared, served with a tequila sauced veggie salsa with charred onions, black beans, corn, carrots and red and green peppers.

The service is exceptional, and at night torches and candlelight heighten the romantic ambiance. For another romantic dining experience, try Grace's Cottage, located at Point Grace, and offering a beautiful setting for an intimate meal. The restaurant serves light, gourmet Caribbean cuisine that showcases the region's strong ethnic influences and finest indigenous foods.

Tables are set under wrought-iron cottage style gazebos and around the wraparound veranda, and menu selections feature entrees such as pan-fried red snapper served with a roasted pepper sauce, or a melt in your mouth grilled beef tenderloin served with truffle scented mashed potatoes.

For those looking for a more casual setting, The Secret Garden is tucked away in the covered backyard garden of The Salt Raker Inn on the island of Grand Turk.

Enjoy fresh fish such as grouper, red snapper or lobster, and try the scrumptious key lime pie and Caribbean bread pudding for dessert. Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville is located at the Grand Turk Cruise Center, and is a fun and exciting experience for all the family!

The restaurant can get incredibly busy when there are cruise ships in port, but its large size accommodates large numbers of people, and the service and menu are not compromised in any way by the restaurant's popularity. A great selection of burgers, sandwiches, seafood and salads are available, along with over 52 flavors of margaritas!

Grand Turk, being the political and economic center of Turks and Caicos, does not offer the extensive variety of restaurants that Providenciales does, but nevertheless has a fine selection that are definitely worth a visit.

The less populated islands only have a handful of places to eat, but each offers the visitor a casual and authentic island dining experience, where friendly locals and beautiful beach settings ensure a meal to remember. Overall, Turks and Caicos has a terrific selection of restaurants, from the rustic beachfront cafes serving fresh conch along with a cold beer, to the elegant and refined resort restaurants with their impeccable service and gourmet cuisine.

Regardless of where you eat in Turks Caicos Islands, the flavors of these unique Caribbean islands will satisfy even the most discriminating appetite!
