Located on its own private peninsular, and thankfully not under any flight path to the airport, this all-inclusive resort has 420 guest rooms and suites available. In addition, it has three private beaches, one of them described as being ‘clothing optional’. All of the beaches are well supplied with beach chairs but you might want to make sure you’ve packed your water shoes because some parts are quite rocky. Your first impression of the Sunset Beach Resort will be when you enter the ultra-modern spectacular two-storey open air lobby, where you have a panoramic Caribbean view and, fittingly for a resort aiming to cater for families, there are a host of activities, for people of all ages and tastes. The pride of place amongst the activities must go to the brand new Pirates’ Paradise Water Park, which has got all the slides, rides, twists and turns you would expect. There’s a Buccaneer Beach, Blackbeard’s Lazy River, the Caribbean Pirates’ Paradise Fort as well as waterfalls and two spectacular elevated giant hot tubs. In addition, you can choose between the three freshwater swimming pools, the mega Jacuzzi, the air-conditioned gym, the four championship tennis courts, the shuffleboard, beach volleyball and basketball – and even the giant outdoor chess board! Down on the beaches, they have paddle boats, sunfish, kayaking or snorkeling for you to try, with even ‘lazy’ snorkeling boards – that you lay on which have a glass window so that you can see the tropical fish underneath you! For the younger kids, there’s the Club Mongoose, which caters for those between 2 and 12 years of age and then the Pirates’ Cove Teen Center, for the older ones to be able to get away from their parents for a while! All of this, then, plus, if you’ve time, the Spa, the electronic slot machines, the Gift Shop, and Internet access and a Business Office so you can keep in touch with work if you really have to. In terms of food, there’s the standard buffet, with plenty of choice, but also both a Chinese and Italian restaurant, with a Jamaican opening at the beginning of March. There’s also a grill serving burgers, jerk chicken and fries – as well as ice creams and drinks – at other times. For those who really want to be ‘colonial’, there’s even afternoon English tea! At night, there is the Galaxy disco and also nightly entertainment, such as Caribbean floor shows and beach party nights and fashion shows. (If you’ve got a young baby to get to sleep you might want to request a room away from the entertainment area.) On the subject of rooms, they all come with air-conditioning, a balcony, cable television and the kinds of amenity you need for a family on vacation. Some of the reviews of the resort do say that a few rooms are now a little old-fashioned but many of them have already been updated. This refurbishment means that there is some ongoing work on the site, but there appears to be little disruption or inconvenience. Sunset Beach resort Jamaica, the full service family vacation spot!
