Port Antonio Jamaica

Port Antonio Jamaica is the capital of the parish of Portland. It is located on the northeastern coast of Jamaica, which is about 100 km from Kingston. Port Antonio is the island's third largest port and it is famous as a shipping point for bananas and coconuts.

Port Antonio Jamaica is one of the more important tourist attractions and contributes a large amount to the islands economy. Port Antonio was a sleepy coastal town until the 1880’s, after which the banana trade was started here by Lorenzo Dow Baker.

This changed the sleepy town to a favorite port for the wealthy American traders and travelers. In fact, the banana trade became so large that the weekly sailings were larger here than the English port of Liverpool.

Things to do in Port Antonio Jamaica

This area also gained a lot of popularity because of the Hollywood stars. It became a haven for shooting movies, particularly in the 50’s, like "Club Paradise" and "Cocktail". Many popular stars, politicians, etc., travel to Port Antonio, Jamaica regularly. So tourists should be ready to get a few pictures of their favorite stars soaking in the sun.

Watch a one minute forty-seven second video about Port Antonio, produced with the help of ASAID on the subject of sustainable tourism. Shows some great shots of Port Antonio and you can see why this sleepy little town has become so popular. Comes with great commentary! Try it out...sound on?

A popular spot in Port Antonio is the area called the Blue Lagoon. The place got its name due to the color of the water that comes from the depths: over 200 feet down! Other popular sight-seeing spots include Frenchman's Cove Beach, the ruins of Folly Mansion, the historic De Montevin Lodge, the Rio Grande River, Boston Bay and Reich falls.

The once sleepy town of Port Antonio Jamaica is the birth place of billionaire Michael Lee-Chin, musicians Junior Murvin and Mikey Dread and footballer Omar Brissett.

Tourists can explore the streets and glimpse a little of the golden days of the past or steer down the lazy river listening to tales of the lost era. They can immerse themselves in the luxuries of the new marina and look up the Trident Castle, which has partly been converted to a hotel.

The local Rastafarians should not be given a miss. Try some local food....or maybe a "Red Stripe".

The tourists can also indulge in some exercise by taking a mountain trek or bike trip. Both give a great view of the lovely scenes and sights of this beautiful town. There are also water activities like diving into the depths of Blue Lagoon. The caves inside and outside the water are also open for the tourists to explore.

All Tourists can enjoy their stay here, with facilities available for all kinds of budgets. There are villas, guest houses, hotels and lodges available which are popular for their hospitality.

One of the most popular beaches here is the San San Beach. It’s a private beach and the center of a Golf and Country Club under construction by the San San Development Co. The lovely white sand beach is accessible to guests at Goblin Hill and other hotels. The Fern Hill club, The Jamaican Palace and Trident Castle are some of the luxurious hotels in this region.

And don't forget, you are only a short drive away from Ocho Rios and Kingston, but in an area with far fewer tourists and a lot more space! Don't forget to visit the always interesting Port Antonio Jamaica.
