Miss Jamaica

Believe it or not, there is a lot of misconceptions about when the Miss Jamaica beauty pageant actually begun. Some say it is one year while others may think that it was a different year.

The official start of the Miss Jamaica beauty contest was in 1963 and most of the runner-ups and winners went on to then compete in the international pageants.

Throughout the years, there has been some controversy surrounding the competition.

For example, in 1964, the pageant organizers sent the pageant's runner up to compete in the Miss World pageant instead of the actual winner for that year, Mitsy Constantine. Some say it may have been because she requested that her own mother go with her to act as the chaperon for her.

There have also been some issues from regarding skin tone and favoritism that rocked the Miss Jamaica pageant from time to time. It seemed to many people that the women with the lighter skin would get more attention and were given special treatment.

You wouldn't think that such favoritism would happen on the island, but it did and it can still happen today from time to time.

But once the Festival Office took over the Miss Jamaica pageant in the mid 1970s, the pageant started focusing more on talent, cultural awareness and also community development.

During this time, the beauty pageant component was passed to the Spartan Health Club, which is the club that currently organizes what we all know as the Miss Jamaica World pageant or contest.

The first queen from Jamaica to receive the Miss World title was Carol Crawford in 1963. There have been many winners from the pageant that have gone on to do wonderful things.

With a new pageant every year, there are more chances for the young girls from Jamaica to show that they have not just beauty, but brains and some talent as well.

These well rounded individuals are just a sampling of what makes the island of Jamaica so special.

If you happen to have the chance, you might want to see about getting a place in the audience for the next Miss Jamaica pageant. It is certainly a great way to spend part of your vacation and you just never know when you might be experiencing history in the making.

Even if you are someone that has never really found yourself all that interested in pageants, you will most likely appreciate them after taking a closer look at what these ladies go through to prepare for the event.

And these are smart women too. Most of them want to use the pageant as a stepping stone to bigger and better things in life. And looking around the beaches of Jamaica there certainly are many possible contestants.

Miss Jamaica often goes a long way in the Miss World finals, something all Jamaicans can be very proud of.
