Antigua Caribbean

Vacation on Antigua Caribbean for a Special Experience!

It can be difficult to choose a specific destination for a Caribbean island vacation. To the uninitiated, the Caribbean is, well, the Caribbean, and each island seems much like the next.

However, veteran travelers know each island has its own distinct character, and nowhere is this more true than the beautiful island of Antigua. Try an Antigua Caribbean vacation.

Antigua has always been strongly associated with Barbuda, but forget about Barbuda for now. This article discusses various factors that will cause you to choose Antigua when planning your Caribbean island vacation.

Antigua is a sparkling jewel in the eastern Caribbean, north of Montserrat and Guadeloupe and southeast of Nevis, St. Kitts, St. Martin and St. Barts. It's the largest of the Leeward Islands, being approximately fourteen miles long and eleven miles wide.

Its 108 square miles feature 365 beaches - a different beach for every day of the year. The island is large enough to provide plenty of opportunities for exploration, and its late 18th and early 19th century association with Britain and its navy have left many reminders for travelers to visit.

Vacationers who choose Antigua for their destination almost always visit English Harbor, Antigua's historical district around Nelson's Dockyard National Park. The entire area was the British fleet's headquarters during the time of Lord Admiral Nelson, the hero of the Battle of Trafalgar. Historic British fortifications and buildings can be seen throughout the park.

So where are all the beaches...?

Naturally, the island's huge number of beaches provide a major reason to plan a vacation on Antigua. Most are located on the island's more sheltered west coast. Every Antiguan beach is open to the public, and each one is different, so your main problem will be deciding on the specific beach that would be best for you.

No matter which one you chose, however, never visit an isolated beach alone. You should make sure you get excellent directions before you go.

Dickenson Bay and Runaway Bay both feature highly developed resort beaches on Antigua's northwest coast. Fort James and Deep Bay are closest to St. Johns. Surfers frequent Galley Bay during winter, and Hawksbill's four beaches are spectacular, although be advised that one of them is nudist.

Because the region is hilly, Antigua's south and southwest coasts are home to the island's less developed beaches, which are visited much less often than those along the island's west and northwest coastline. Darkwood Beach, Fryes Bay, and several beaches near Johnsons Point are located in this area, which features a scenic winding coastal road.

If you're looking for seclusion, Doigs Beach or Rendezvous Bay might be ideal, although they can be difficult to get to. Pigeon Point, located near English Harbor, might be a good beach for kicking back after you spend a day in Antigua's historical district.

Half Moon Bay, in the southeast corner of Antigua's east coast, is a national park. Vacationers seeking a beach for their families often choose Half Moon Bay, but Long Bay, at the far eastern end of the island, would also be outstanding. These east-facing beaches are much more rugged than those on the west coast, but they provide productive spots for family beach-combing.

Whether basking on sunny beaches, sightseeing at tourist spots or immersing yourself in island history is your heart's desire, Antigua can more than satisfy your wishes. So, start planning your Antigua Caribbean island vacation today!
